How did the self-criticism of the past link to a computerless imaginary of today? Which axioms and ideas at the foundation of their work still hold up, what becomes irrelevant, what was missing from the beginning? In the scenario of collapse, what was once speculative becomes historical.
Does the speculative mode take the place of historical context, and perhaps orthodox scientific method, of our work? When we reconstruct personal knowledge under imaginary circumstances, everything is up for re-invention. Karolina Sobecka is an artist, designer and researcher, examining social arrangements that exploit, resist or accommodate technological change.

Preparing for the end of the digital world in the data centre industry Pushing studies of post-digital futures in new directions, this paper will examine for the first time how images and imaginaries of electromagnetic pulse EMP events are transforming the speculative end of the digital world into a commercial opportunity in the data centre industry.
EMPs are powerful bursts of electromagnetic energy primarily produced by high-altitude nuclear explosions. The energy generated by EMPs can induce damaging high-voltage surges in electronic equipment within the range of the burst.
08-09/04/12222 – Colloque : Sans ordinateur / Without computer
Over the last two decades, the EMP threat has steadily moved onto national security agendas around the world and become a key target of critical infrastructure protection, amidst much public and political debate. The data centre industry has emerged at the forefront of EMP preparedness, with growing numbers of facility operators taking precautions to protect their premises from these electromagnetic events. In the data centre press, EMPs are often represented as microchip-melting energy blasts that would entail the prolonged loss of digital technologies and the collapse of computing infrastructure on a potentially continental scale for months or even years.
Drawing from long-term ethnographic fieldwork in the data centre industry, this paper will explore the role that dystopian imaginaries of a future world without computers are playing in the making and selling of data centre security.
In doing so, the paper will investigate how — and to what ends — foundational narratives of technological progress and mastery are being reconfigured through prisms of technological dependency and vulnerability in discourses and practices of EMP preparedness. With EMPs being configured as threats to an increasingly technology-dependent humanity, deeper understandings of the ways that the electromagnetic end of the digital world is being rendered politically and economically productive under logics of anticipatory security are urgently needed.
Based with the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, Alexander Taylor works at the intersection of digital anthropology, science and technology studies and media archaeology. His research interests include: techno-apocalyptic narratives, data preservation and pre-digital nostalgia.
Traumatized by the cultural revolution, a Chinese scientist establishes communication with an alien race in a nearby planetary system. This triggers a fatal string of events which ultimately lead to the destruction of humanity. Most striking is the idea of a technological lockdown, initiated by the alien race. Because of their small size these machines are able to reach earth long before the alien invasion fleet. Once they arrive on earth they are capable of keeping all human communication under surveillance and of disrupting research in particle physics, limiting the scientific development of the human race.
